Three soul warming hot drinksWiebke Venter
As we are looking towards winter and a longer period of cold and rainy weather, it´s time for something that is warms your soul. Check out these delicious recipes that are perfect for a little treat… and as a bonus, they have added health benefits.
HOT SPICY CHOCOLATE
Treat your soul with this amazing recipe!
- Heat up 1 cup of cow´s milk or almond milk.
- Add 1 tbsp of chocolate drops (a smooth chocolate bar will work just as well).
Make sure you use at least a 70 % dark chocolate. You can also use 100 % cacao powder, which is even the better because it comes in a glass jar.
- Spice your hot chocolate with 1 tsp of cinnamon, a pinch of cayenne pepper and 1-2 tsp of honey.
Chocolate has a long tradition in native cultures in Central- and South America. They use pure cacao in their rituals as a heart opener.
Cacao contains 66 different active ingredients that can prevent heart disease. In fact, some studies show evidence that certain ingredients in chocolate correlate with positive effects on the cardiovascular system.
Chocolate also makes you happy! That’s due to Serotonin, the “happy hormone”. Chocolate contains the precursor to Serotonin, the so-called Tryptophan. In humans Tryptophan is converted to Serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate your mood, as well as your sleep, appetite, digestion, and memory.
Furthermore, honey contains anti-inflammatory enzymes and antioxidants. Cinnamon is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory benefits and antimicrobial properties.
If you are not a fan of chocolate or simply don´t have any chocolate at home, just try the recipe without cacao.
- 1 cup of cow´s milk or almond milk
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- a pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1-2 tsp of honey
It tastes just as wonderful – and is good for your mind, body and soul!
Nature has a lot to offer when it comes to benefitting our health, especially in wintertime. Then we have a bigger need for nutrients that support our immune system. This trendy drink is a combination of hot (plant) milk, coconut oil, honey and the golden essence of turmeric.
Turmeric is anti-inflammatory wonder. Modern research suggests that turmeric is a potent antioxidant with antimicrobial and anticancer effects too.
There are a lot of recipes for golden milk. However, this is our favourite:
- 2 tsp of ground turmeric
- fresh ginger
- 1 tsp of cinnamon
- pinch of cayenne pepper
- 1 cup almond milk
- 1 tsp of coconut oil
- 2 tsp of honey
Put the almond milk in a pot over medium heat.
Add the turmeric, fresh ginger, cinnamon and cayenne pepper.
Remove the pot from the heat as it starts to boil.
Add coconut oil and honey for some sweetness.
Golden milk origins in the Indian tradition of Ayurveda. There it is used to treat a lot of different diseases. For us, it is the perfect treat for the mind, body and soul.
Please note that when prepared with full cream milk and honey these drinks give you a lot of energy. Thus, they cannot be treated as a mere “drink” per se. They instead better suited as a snack on an indulgent self-care day.
So, light some candles, snuggle up on the couch with a good book and enjoy your soul warming drink.
Stay happy and healthy!
