Let’s talk about…sanitary padsWiebke Venter
The menstruation is still something that we don´t really want to talk about. But it is the most natural thing in the world and 50 % of the world´s population is dealing with it every single month. A woman will menstruate in her life for an average duration of 39 years. In this time, she will use 12 675 pads (or tampons) according to the Heinrich Böll Foundation. A menstrual cup is one responsible choice when it comes to plastic-free menstrual solutions. We have written about how to use it, as well as the advantages and disadvantages. For those who usually prefer sanitary pads, we have a wonderful waste free solution. The brand “MoonTime” makes brilliant reusable pads – the best in the country that we could find.
So let´s talk about sanitary pads then…
What are reusable sanitary pads made of?
Each pad consists of four layers of 100% cotton Shweshwe fabric, one layer of 4-5ml towelling and one layer of breathable leakproof material that prevents anything from running out. Their shape is ergonomically formed, and they have two quality press-studs, so it effortlessly folds around your underwear and effectively stays in place.
How many sanitary pads do I need?
This question cannot be answered generally. Of course, it depends on how heavy or weak your period flow is and how long it lasts. Basically, you need about the same amount of sanitary pads per day as you would with conventional disposable products.
How do I use my reusable pads?
Using reusable sanitary pads is not rocket science. You actually use them just like disposable sanitary pads. However, instead of sticking them in your panties, you put them in, flip the wings and close them with a press-stud.
How do I clean my MoonTime Pads.
When you are done with them, soak them in a bucket of cold water with essential oil or lemon. Hot water will set the blood. Then hand wash them with a natural, unfragranced soap, and rinse. Hang them up to dry, preferably in the sun. If you can’t wash your pad immediately, simply rinse them immediately after use and don’t let blood dry out. You can then fold, clip and put them in a wet bag until you can wash it. The MoonTime sanitary pads are also machine washable on a delicate cycle with biodegradable detergent. You don´t have to wash your sanitary pads separately. The blood that is being rinsed out won´t colour the rest of your laundry. However, wash with darks and colours. Please do not tumble dry, bleach, iron or use softener as this can compromise the lifetime of your pads immensely. Make sure pads are fully dried before storing. With gentle care, your MoonTime pads will last for many years.
Although these sanitary pads have been pre-washed, we recommend that you wash them again before first use when using them the first time.
Are reusable pads hygienic?
Cloth sanitary pads are – unlike disposable ones with a plastic cover – breathable and therefore ideal for everyone who is prone to fungal infections. The cotton makes you sweat less in them, and they don´t stick uncomfortably to your body. In addition, there is much less odour than with pads with a plastic surface. MoonTime pads are highly absorbent, leak-proof, lightweight, breathable and uniquely designed for your comfort.
Why are reusable sanitary pads better for the Earth?
By using reusable sanitary pads, you save a lot of waste. Reusable pads that you use for several years can save up to 1,000 disposable pads or tampons from ending up in landfills.
How do I change reusable sanitary pads on the go?
When changing hygiene items of any kind, you should make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly before going to the toilet – or at least sanitise them. To store the used sanitary pad, it is best to use a wet bag. The small bag is designed to keep your pads safely tucked away in something beautiful. It has a wet compartment to store your used, rinsed, folded pad until you can wash it. It even has a dry side for your clean ones. It holds 6 – 8 pads and is great to store your clean pads in at the end of your cycle – ready for your next moon time.
