5 essentials for eco-conscious hikers

I’m sure everyone who is conscious about how important it is protect the environment, enjoys a few good hours of exercising in nature too. We, on our part love to go hiking! The mountains around Cape Town are just gorgeous and since Leon and I met while doing a Thru-hike in Spain, we now connect with each other on a deeper level as well as with nature when we are walking through it.

If your next outdoor adventure is also calling, make sure to pack the right things to keep you safe, like enough water, proper sun protection and energising snacks. To avoid all of the plastic packaging that these things usually come in, we have put together our very own plastic free hiking essentials kit. Take a look:

1. Water bottle

Of course! Staying hydrated on the mountain is super important. Especially because you are sweating so much and the sun in South Africa can be scorching. Our stainless steel water bottle is for those who want to impress AND stay healthy. We have chosen this specific bottle for specific reasons and designed it according to our passion: Being out on the mountains. It carries the message “And into the mountains I go to lose my mind and find my soul.” – Exactly how we feel! The bottle is plastic free and has a bottleneck that makes it comfortable to drink from. That may sound awkward but if you used bottles with wide necks and tried to drink from it while walking, you know what I am talking about (I think most of the water spills on your clothes instead of in your mouth). The bottle holds 750ml to quench your thirst throughout the hike and the best thing is, it is insulated, so it keeps your drink cold for longer. For those who can´t identify with the mountain design, there is a minimalistic design in silver too ;)

2. Wild sunscreen

Sunscreen is super important for obvious reasons. We are choosing this eco-friendly alternative as we love the packaging, the texture comes in handy as it can´t spill and it isn’t packed with harmful ingredients: WILD zinc natural sunblock.

This reef-friendly sun protection is an all-natural sun cream containing just biodegradable ingredients for guilt-free swimming in the ocean or natural springs on your hike. It is a broad-spectrum cover, offering up to SPF 30 if a thicker layer is worn. Made with non-nano zinc which won’t be absorbed but creates a protective layer on your skin that reflects the sun’s harmful rays.

3. Insect repellent

Especially when you are out taking long walks in the forest, you might come across some annoying bugs. This DEET-free insect repellent balm is made from a rich blend of natural oils and butters and helps to keep these bugs at bay. It’s good for your skin and infused with Khaki Bush, which is locally sourced and a highly-effective active ingredient. Love it!

4. Stasher snack bag

Low blood sugar can happen to anyone, at any time. However, it is most likely to overwhelm you on a hike after a straining uphill section. And what to do in the middle of a mountain with no supermarket close by? Because it can be actually life-saving (sometimes also relationship-saving) we always carry some nuts or other small snacks with us. We love our stasher bags as they are environmentally safe, long-lasting and such a smart alternative to plastic. We don´t only love them for our hiking snacks but stash almost anything in there: chargers when traveling, phones (to protect from rain), small craft supplies at home, and more. Win-win-win-win.

5. Silistraw

“Why do I need a straw on the mountain?”…you might think. Well, you don´t. However, maybe you´ll need one afterwards. We tend to go for a drink in the City or a close wine farm after a very nice hike and I like to carry my straws with me to be able to reject plastic straws that come with G+T, juices or iced coffees. Refusing straws might not save the world, but it is definitely a habit that I personally want to keep and feel good with. The Silistraw is a reusable straw made from 100 % food-grade silicone. It can be easily cleaned, folded and stored in a convenient small capsule resulting in no mess. The good thing about this silistraw – and why it´s great to pop in your hiking backpack – is that it is super light, folds up in its capsule and fits in a tiny pocket. You can even put it in the dishwasher after use. It’s also great for those who like to chew on their straw :)
