Cling wrap and aluminium foil are still used in a lot of households to cover yoghurt, wrap school sandwiches or to keep fresh produce fresh. However, there is a much eco-friendlier alternative, and it’s reusable too: beeswax wraps! 

Single use packaging does not have a long life. Reusable beeswax wraps, on the contrary, can be used for many months. We are so happy that we found the Beeswax Wrap Rounds from 6 Degrees East! These wraps are made from a mixture of raw materials and available in different sizes and shapes.  

But, how do you actually use beeswax wraps? Can you wrap fish and meat in them? And which raw materials do they contain? Here are the answers to your beeswax wraps FAQs:

In recent decades, its popularity has grown. Today, tea tree oil is used for a number of conditions and is commonly found in cosmetics to keep your hair, skin and nails healthy, as well as in topical medicines and household products.

The oil is probably best known for its antibacterial activity. Some research suggests that the broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity associated with the oil comes from its ability to damage the cell walls of bacteria. However, more research is needed to understand how it might work. The oil not only possesses antibacterial properties, but also anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antifungal properties.

What raw materials do the beeswax wraps contain? 

The brand 6 Degrees East has grown from a love for organic gardening, beekeeping, and living lightly on the earth. The beeswax wraps are locally crafted, planet-friendly and “don’t cost the Earth”. They are made from 100% cotton fabric steeped in a blend of beeswax, tree resin and jojoba oil, which makes them flexible, pliable and adhesive. There are vegan alternatives as well that are made from pure cotton fabric steeped in a blend of soy wax, tree resin and jojoba oil. 

What temperature is best for the beeswax wraps? 

You should store your wraps at room temperature, i.e. in the kitchen. The temperature in your fridge and even in your freezer are totally fine, too. Just keep in mind that too much heat is not good as the wax will melt. Please do not put them in the sun or in a hot car! 

Can I store meat and fish in the wax wraps? 

No, beeswax wraps or soywax wraps are not suitable to store raw meat and fish.  

Will food take on the taste of the wax? 

In individual cases like when packaging fatty foods, changes in taste can occur, especially when the wraps are new. You can experiment with peace of mind, because the components used in the wraps are safe to consume. 

How can I clean the wax wraps?

Simply wash after usage with cold (!) water and ethanol free dishwashing soap. Then let them air dry. With good care they will last you months.

Is the packaging also eco-friendly? 

Yes, the wraps come in 100% natural packaging. In fact, the pack of three are bound together with a simple string with a tag attached. The round wax wraps only have a little tag attached. Our Re-Store parcels are also packed with recyclable and biodegradable packaging.

Why are beeswax wraps better than tin foil? 

Plastic pollutes our planet, especially our oceans and rivers. It takes up to 500 years and more until it degrades. Single-use plastic is not reusable. Beeswax wraps, however, are reusable, depending on how often you use them in a year. You can even refresh them from time to time by putting them in the oven at a low temperature. Additionally, they are completely compostable, so there is no waste at all. Unlike tin foil, beeswax has antifungal & antibacterial properties, making it suitable for food storage.
